Fengshui tells the story of a family of three in Wuhan, China. Husband Ma Xue Wu is the director of a government-run enterprise, wife Li Bao Li is a vendor on Hanzheng Street. They also have a son named Ma Xiao Bao. Ma Xue Wu’s job offers the family the opportunity to move into a new house, but a series of misfortunes fall upon the family when they do. Ma Xue Wu wants to divorce, Li Bao Li discovers her husband is having an affair, and Ma Xue Wu’s homeless mother moves in with them. Eventually, Ma Xue Wu commits suicide by jumping into a river.
Bao Li’s good friend, Xiao Jing, is convinced that the “fengshui” of the Ma family’s new home is bad, causing one misfortune after another to fall upon them. However, Bao Li refuses to believe that or succumb to fate and is determined to bring her family out of their tragic circumstances on her own.
10 years later, the couple’s son Ma Xiao Bao begins investigating his father’s death on his own and discovers many secrets surrounding his parents’ marriage, causing strife between him and his mother.
